Tyler Michael James



Cellist Tyler James got his musical start attending the Virginia Governor's School for the Arts while working on his private teacher’s farm to pay for lessons. Tyler toured as principal cellist of the 2018 National Revival Tour of Miss Saigon. He has performed in Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, the Kimmel Center, and the Boston Opera House. Tyler was recently featured in the Boston Globe for his performance of the Brahms B-Flat Sextet in Nicolas Sterner's Courtyard Concert Series.   

Tyler has performed chamber works with artists including members of the Horzowski Trio, Peter Zazofsky, Andrés Càrdenes, and Karen Dreyfus. He has performed on Palm Beach Cultural Council's Summer String Series as well as with the Eureka Ensemble, the opus87 Piano Quartet, and the Cape Anne Symphony.  As a soloist, Tyler performed the Elgar Cello Concerto with the NYU Symphony Orchestra under Dr. Adam Glaser and the Tan Dun Cello Concerto Snow in June with the NYU Percussion Ensemble. Tyler additionally volunteers his time with Lyrica Boston, the resident ensemble of the Boston Healthcare for the Homeless Program, to produce programs for homeless individuals and nursing home residents. He will be on the 2021 cello faculty of the Arts Ahisma Chamber Music Festival. 

As an advocate for new music, Tyler has premiered a myriad of original works by contemporary composers of various genres. He has had the pleasure of being guided by the likes of  Jessie Montgomery, Claude-Michel Schönberg,  Andrew Kozar, Amanda Berlind, and George Katehis on their music. Tyler made his 92nd Street Y debut performing Dina Pruzhansky’s Piano Trio Sound of the Land on her faculty recital. 

Tyler earned his Bachelor's Degree Magna Cum Laude from New York University on full scholarship; he studied traditional performance with Marion Feldman and historical performance with Myron Lutzke while earning a minor in Political Science. He has performed in masterclasses for cellists Alisa Weilerstein, Mark Kosower, Hans Jensen, Paul Watkins, Colin Carr, Bonnie Hampton, and Julian Schwarz and has held residencies with both the Ēnso String Quartet and the Zodiac Trio. Tyler is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree with Dr. Terry King, protegé of the legendary Gregor Piatigorsky, at the Longy School of Music Of Bard College as an Amy and Joshua Boger Scholar.
